In the wake of the Las Vegas shooting, I feel that Jesus wants me to share something with you. I am a little nervous, because I don’t know if this will be comforting you in any way. It may not make you feel better about what happened but it may explain something. I actually wrote this down in letter-form months ago, but this evening I felt Jesus encouraging me to share it on my blog also.
During one of the terror attacks in London, I asked God a question. “Father, why do you allow things like this to happen? Can’t You just prevent it”? God answered me with the following allegory. He said, “Imagine a gift, put in a box and neatly wrapped in beautiful paper with a bow on top. It is the most beautiful gift you have ever seen. Every human being on earth receives this gift. The gift is for every human being the same and they get it every single day. The gift is….love. The question is, what do you do with that gift? You can categorize three groups of people. The first group does not even bother to open the gift. They put it somewhere out of sight or they throw it away, without even looking inside the gift. They are not interested. The second group opens the gift but is angry. They cannot understand what love can do in their life. They rather choose hate over love. They reject the gift. The last group of people accepts the gift. They eagerly open the box and when they see the love inside it, they enthusiastically take it out. They feel the love and want to share it with others”.
Every human being needs to decide, every morning again, whether or not they accept God’s gift of love. Unfortunately many, either don’t even bother to consider love, and all too many reject it. The point is that God gave each an own choice. Of course He could force everyone to love but than God would not be very loving himself. He would be a dictator forcing people to behave a certain way. If God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life, don’t you think He would be loving enough to leave the choice up to us? God’s love is so unimaginably big that it is unfathomable for the human mind!!! God goes above and beyond to show you that He loves you. And He loves you so much that He leaves the choice up to you. Do you treat people with love or hate? It is entirely up to you.
Like I said, this is not a consolation to what happens in the world. The reality remains that there always will be people against God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Otherwise Jesus would not have to judge the world when He comes back. It is a reality of sin that this world is trapped in. You and me, we cannot change the world. But we can change ourselves. And changing your own heart is a good beginning. Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. Let’s start with that. Choose to pray for people who haven’t accepted their gift yet, that they may accept it and be bathed in it! Let’s pray that people who chose hate, may be covered in love, so their hearts will change. Let’s not become bitter about the world, but let’s lift the world up to Jesus in prayer.
Yet again, the most important thing is, have you opened your gift already? If not, open it! Open God’s gift for you and experience it for yourself. God loves you, unimaginably much! And God’s love for you, will never ever change!
